Hiva Oa

The Southern Group of the Marquesas includes the islands of Hiva Oa, Tahuata and Fatu Hiva. This beautiful island is shaped like a seahorse whose mountain range includes Mt. Temetiu and Mt. Feani as its main peaks and form a real wall around Atuona. The pretty little town of Atuona is known as the privileged resting place of Paul Gauguin and singer Jacques Brel.

A notable site to visit are the petroglyphs, near Tahauku, that resemble those found on Easter Island. For a true adventure try exploring the Marquesas aboard the Aranui. The Aranui is a cargo/passenger ship which is approximately 312 feet long and visits the Tuamotus and Marquesas 15 times a year on a 16 day adventure. Weekly inter-island flights from Nuki Hiva several times a week.
